Ramblers Orienteering Club

EVENT SUMMARY: Morgan Arboretum – October 19, 2008

The Arboretum was in one of its very best moods. Bright sunshine and spectacular Autumn colours put everyone in a joyful, and a running, mood.

Four different course lay-outs – Novice to Long-Advanced – offered a challenge that ranged not only in distance but especially in technical difficulty. Some enthusiasts discovered that Advance courses set at the Arboretum aren’t as easy as those at other parks that we use! The amount of leaves that had fallen may also have made smaller trails harder to see. The woods were open everywhere!

A large number of Girl Guides and Boy Scouts participated on the easiest course, along with a great many family groups with young children. A record number of 215 persons took part in 89 “starts”, among them 86 youths, the majority being under 10 years of age.

Notable performances :

Course 4 Francis Falardeau had little trouble covering the 9.7 km Long-Advanced. His time of 1:16:54 led a field of fourteen. Andrew Cornett drove from Ottawa to his first meet with us and claimed 2nd place with 1:32:48. Bruce Glen was 3rd in 1:44:29.

Course 3 Jordan Slavchev had a good run on the 5.2 km Advance course, registering a time of 0:49:02. Donald Watson was 2nd (1:03:45) and David Glen 3rd (1:06:13). 4th and 5th places went to the two top women: Denise OBriain edging Jessica Auer, 1:14:00 to 1:19:47.

Course 2 There was almost a tie at the top of this 3.5 km course. Robert Darby, accompanied by son, Kevin (11), finished in 0:50:01. Boris Chopov, with daughter Boriana (12) was a half minute back in 0:50:33. Thomas Davignon had a good run, making 3rd place in 1:20:41.

Course 1 Most people spent between one and two hours to walk this course however Steve Allan and Suzanne Makinson, with Amy, 16, and Melissa, 5, made short work of it, returning in just over 37 minutes. Mary Ellen Montague was 2nd in 49:35.

Our congratulations to all who came out and participated. And our thanks to The Morgan Arboretum for the opportunity of again holding our premier event on their superb property !

THANKS also to those who helped at the meet: Gloria C and Sylvie Perrault who handled Registration; Bruce, Elaine and Thomas Davignon who worked on timing. Stéphane Rousseau who made arrangements with TVA for the video. Karen Oljemark who, with her John Abbott College students, will be picking up all the flags.
