Ramblers Orienteering Club

MEET REPORT :

Centre de la Nature LAVAL – September 21, 2008

“Sprint-O”

The day was sunny and mild – great weather for the second-last day of Summer!

This park doesn’t have the possibility for difficult or through-the-woods orienteering but it does provide the opportunity – at least for advanced Orienteers – to navigate at maximum speed, and that is what we saw amongst the top dozen competitors on the Long Course. For the less experienced – and the not quite as fast – including many family groups, there were lots of opportunities to relate what was shown on the map to the features around about and to navigate effectively. A single misgiving of my own: I wish we had started everyone on Course Two. As well as being shorter it was somewhat easier technically than Course One.

The Long Course comprised running loops one and two non-stop, using separate maps for each. Total best-route distance was 6.4 km. The fastest four finished with just 25 seconds separating them. A similar close finish was experienced at last year’s Laval race but the top three then were not present this year.

The speediest to cover the 25-controls was Andreas Rutkauskas in 0:39:31. Stefan Hammar, a visitor from Sweden, was timed in one second longer, Thomas Kneubühler was 0:39:39 and Bruce Glen was 0:39:56. Francis Falardeau also turned in a super-fast run but he had already been on the course (teaching) and so was unofficial.

The top woman on the course and 5th overall was Jessica Douglas. She clocked 0:47:44, while running with a beginner-friend, Lynne Kurelek.

Short Course participants did the first leg of the event – 3.4 km. There were a number of first-timers as well as occasional Orienteers, and a considerable number of family groups, some with infants who got their first taste of the sport while being wheeled along in a baby carriage.

Christophe Deprez covered the 15 controls in just 26 minutes. Sylvain Harel accompanied by his 6-year old daughter were 2nd (0:48:10). Chantal Pharand and Marc De LaPlante, with their two children, 9 and 6, were 3rd in 0:49:05.

Dominic Rousseau, 8 and David Cassavant, 6, did the course alone for the first time and finished 12th (1:04:21). Wow!

13 keen members of Army Cadets Corps 3028, along with their Cadet Captain, Frédéric Houle, took part in the event. Alexandre Morales and Jason Goudie had the best results in the Corps, finishing 10th and 12th respectively on the Long Course. Very commendable for a first-time experience at an O-event !

There were 52 “Starts” on the two courses. Total participation, including children, was 78.

CREDITS and THANK YOU …

Stéphane Rousseau set – and took down – all the controls, helped with the course designs and did the “start” timing. Wife, Barbara Schumann, timed the finishers (while keeping her cast-enclosed leg elevated). Gloria handled the Registration.
