Orienteering Street & Mini-park Maze

Dollard-des-Ormeaux April 27, 2008

We had a wonderful day for our opening event of the Spring season. It was sunny and mild, the last of the snows had disappeared and the folliage was beginning to bud again. Terry Fox park chalet wasn’t yet officially open but DDO Recreation Services were kind enough to provide us with a key to the building. Thanks, Keith !

We had set up three courses. The LONG was 14.2 km, the length of a 1/3 marathon – if run using the shortest route choices. The MIDDLE was 8.3 km and the SHORT was 5.3 km. Each provided about the same degree of navigational difficulty.

Almost all who participated on the SHORT were families, although the three fastest times were posted by individuals: Denise OBriain covered the course in just 39:23. François Belanger, 2nd in 43:09, hadn’t done orienteering since he learned it in a course at Collège Maisonneuve, quite a few years ago. Mary Ellen Montague did her only other O-meet last Fall at the Morgan Arboretum. She came 3rd this time in 56:30. Of the many families who walked the Short Course, the average time to complete it was 75 minutes. Not bad, as many were first-timers. It was nice to frequently see their little ones come running in to the finish, obviously happy with their O experience. Some told of their kids pausing in mini-parks along the way to enjoy play equipment found there.

The MIDDLE course attracted a variety of walkers and runners although the fastest were obviously moving pretty quickly! Anthony Berkers topped the group with a time of 46:12 for the 8.3 km. Michael Bole was 2nd in 48:32 and Andreas Rutkauskas 3rd in 51:20. Jessica Auer was the fastest woman with a time of 58:05.

It was the 1/3 Marathon “LONG Course” that provided the most exciting finish. Eric Lillie* and Dmitri Golovanov had already posted good times (1:19:09 and 1:25:10) when Francis Falardeau, a frequent winner in past events, came back with a super 1:06:01. Simon Denier, who had started five minutes after Francis, was the only runner with a chance of catching Francis. Eyes were on the clock when, with just two minutes to spare, Simon suddenly appeared and sprinted to the finish. His winning time – a flat 64 minutes. That’s 7.7 minutes/km over the 17-control course.

* An interesting sidelight… Eric, in training for the Ottawa marathon, had run from his Baie d’Urfé home to the DDO meet site – as a warm-up. Unfortunately he lost his control card on the course and, what would have been a third place finish, became an unofficial timing. (He did get a drive home with his wife after the race.)

Congratulations to all who participated.
