REPORT: Ski & Snowshoe Orienteering

The Morgan Arboretum, March 2, 2008

Another gorgeous day for our third Ski and Snowshoe-Orienteering meet this year. Snow conditions were better than we’ve ever known them and an interesting article in the West Island weekly, The Chronicle, attracted some additional participation, all of which resulted in our best attendance ever for a winter O event.

Four courses were set: two for snowshoeing; two for skiing. Snowshoe participants clearly outnumbered the skiers – 20 “starts” to 12. Total participation was 17 on skis, 47 on ‘shoes, though that included 8 kids under 10 years of age, all but two of whom were two years or younger – down to 5 months. While most participants were from the Montreal area, some came from much farther – Ottawa in the west, Sherbrooke and Orford in the east and Jolliet to the north.

Some of the fastest competitors had tiny ones with them : Nicolas Taillifer pulled his 10-months old son Tristan in a pulka and still returned with the second fastest time on the “Short-Ski”. In the “Short-‘Shoe” Martin Bedard covered his course in 1:12:25, while Denise OBriain and Jeff Secours were 2nd while toting their sons Ryan, 2 years and Kyle, 5-months. Kyle was the star in last week’s “Chronicle” article.

In the 9.3 km “Long-Ski” event Eric Lillie turned in a great time of 1:20:30. The course consisted of first completing a 5.7 km ski (as the crow flies) and then continuing on a 3.8 km course. Bruce Glen was 2nd in 1:37:09 and Ralph Seyfert was 4 minutes behind for 3rd.

In the 5.7 km (atcf) “Long Snowshoe-O” David Agar took just 1:04:10 to claim 1st place, 6 minutes ahead of Andreas Rutkauskas who was 2nd. Jessica Auer had a fine race to finish a strong 3rd in 1:25:17.

Congratulations to all who participated…both competitively and recreationally.

Thanks also to Elaine, Bruce and Eric for flag pick-ups and to Gloria who handled registration.
