Ramblers Orienteering Club

REPORT: Mount Royal Park Event – May 13, 2007

Sunny weather, even if a little on the cool side, invariably brings out lots more people, especially amongst those doing the two easier courses. Course 1, in fact, drew a total of 37 people plus ten kids under 10 years of age – the tiniest being carried in a backpack.

Times for the 2.4 km course ranged from a fast 40 minutes by the John & Madeleine Carr family, to an average of 80 minutes, and a very relaxed max of two hours.

Course 4 was 7.3 km with 22 controls. Unfortunately, it suffered from a control (#14) that was misplaced by almost 40 meters. Even so, almost all on the course persevered and located the “rootstock”. The fastest time – 62 min. 10 sec. – was recorded by Thomas Kneubühler. Stephen Novosad took 1:09:11 and Anthony Berkers 1:15:04.

The times are tainted, however, by the course-setting error.

Course 3 was lead by Christophe Deprez (51:27), with Bertrand Lemaitre (58:40), Matthieu Babeau (1:07:45) and Evan Pierce (1:07:50) close behind. There were 13 entries in this 4.6 km (straight-line measurement) course.

Course 2 was a little more challenging than #1 and not quite as technical as #3. After some instruction from Thomas K, Andreas Rutkauskas fleet-footed it around the 3.5 km in just 39:12. Stephen Novosad and his 10-year-old son, Tobin, completed the same 13-controls course in 41:44, and Maksim Kirtsman and sister, Ilya, did it in 58:37.

Andreas apparently enjoyed chasing down the controls so much that he volunteered to pick up all 43 of them – which he did first thing Monday morning.

Pierre Dillenbourg was a surprise entry to our event. From Lausanne, Switzerland, he was visiting Montreal for a conference and was here only for the weekend. To clear his head after his flight he decided to go for a run on the mountain. He spotted a competitor with a map in his hand and asked whether there was an Orienteering meet in progress. Pierre then found us on the hilltop and, even though he didn’t have a penny in his running shorts, we gave him a map of Course 4. (His choice). He completed the Long-Advanced in 1:46:48) without a compass ! These Swiss certainly have a knack with our sport !!

SPECIAL THANKS to Gloria (registration), Elaine (starts), Bruce (instruction) and Andreas flag pick-up.
