MEET REPORT
Bois-de-Liesse
Park –
Fortunately it wasn’t cold but the weather did put a definite dampener on the day’s doings. A forecast of rain – that comes true – does keep away all but the keenest and bravest. Forty-six people, including 2 young children, faced the wet, and with considerable success.
Four courses were set. The 7 km “Long-Advanced” (#4), had 25 controls. The first 16 were shown on competitors’ maps and then a cache of additional maps indicated the locations for the balance of the course. The #3 course, (4.6 km, 17 controls), was an abridged version of the longer course. The Intermediate (#2) course was designed as a step-up from the “Beginner”. It used 12 controls and was 3.8 km. It achieved it’s goal of having almost all participants finish in under 90 minutes, the fastest in less than half that time.
Ramblers’ Dmitri Golovanov was once again the fastest on Course 4 with a winning time of 1:20:25. Bruce Glen and Stéphane Rousseau, both Ramblers, followed with times of 1:27:50 and 1:36:16. Fastest woman on the course was Erica Lay, a McGill student and member of the B.C. Victorienteers Club. She was 5th overall. Her time: 1:41:38.
On Course 3 Ariane Burke (Ottawa OC) edged husband, Donald Watson 1:07:20/1:09:31.
Course 2 had the greatest number of participants. Stephen Novosad, who had previously completed the “Long-Advanced”, flew around in just over 38 minutes. Anthony Berkers was 7½ minutes behind and Therese Jones clocked in at 1:02:00.
Course 1 – the easiest – saw Jean-Pierre Langlois, probably the most “senior” on the course, come back in the shortest time: 47:55.
Congratulation to all.
There were 33 “Starts”, consisting of 46 persons. Happily, nobody “mispunched” at controls and everyone seemed to be in a good humour at the finish. The flags? They’re still out there!
My thanks to those who helped with the meet – Gloria, Bruce, Elaine, and Steve Cabilio who checked all the flags the day before the meet.
