MEET REPORT :   Bois-de-Liesse Park    May 14, 2006

For almost a week forecasters had been predicting a rainy day for our Mothers’ Day event in one of our most favoured parks for Orienteering. Even at 6:30 a.m. it was showering. But, by 9:30, as registration opened, it was warming and the sun was coming out – and it only got better as the day wore on !!

One family that included 10-year-old twin boys, participating for the first time at our meets, enjoyed the day to the extent that they ran 3 of the 4 courses! Unfortunately, a lot of other Orienteers apparently heeded the forecasts. There were only 49 ‘starts’. Total participation was 74 which included 19 children of 10 years-of-age or younger.

It is nice to see the number of families with youngsters who are particpating. It must be the word is spreading.

We had one problem with the advanced Course 4. Because of the size of the park and to gain enough length for the “Long Course”, we (as normally) set a course that zig-zagged back and forth across the most interesting part of the map. In an attempt to avoid the possibility of taking controls out of order some were not shown on the maps provided to competitors at the start. Instead these locations were to be revealed by pieces of map left at a previous control. There was no problem with four such locations but at #11 on Course 4 the plastic-encased map was damaged by an animal (our conclusion). Rain got in and the map was no longer readable. It’s the first time it has happened.

Four of the earliest starters managed to figure out where the next control was – the “descrip-tion” was a ‘small depression’. A few late starters were ‘helped’ before they took off, but most of the runners on the course saw no alternative but to go from #11 directly to #14. (#13 could only be found at #12.) This was not the participants’ fault and the Meet Director offers his regrets and apologies. {In future, at our smaller meets, we will possibly use an honour system and avoid the maps-in-the-woods procedure.}

Unofficially, there were several fast runs on Course 4: Thomas Kneubühler and Dmitri Golovanov had times of just over hour for the 19 controls.

On Course 3 Vincent Dehail was fastest with a time of 1:07:30. 2nd, in 1:16:24, was David Cooper, accompanied by his 10-year-old twin boys, Charles and Duncan (participating for the first time at our meets).

Course 2 saw the closest finish of the day. New Ramblers member, Jean-François Deziel, with a time of 53:44 edged 11-year old Ryan Jones by just 10 seconds. Sandra Phillips accompanied by her 3 children, was 3rd in 1:04:30.

On the Easiest course, Katel Deprez, carrying 8½ months old Méliane, edged new Ramblers member, Sylvie Crevier, 37:00 / 38:30. The Cooper boys, on their first run of the day, were 3rd in 42:00.

Thanks to the several people who helped with the meet organization – registration, timing and picking up the 42 controls after the meet. Thank you, Yee Fun Wong, Christian Reber, Bruce Glen, Elaine, Donald Watson, and, of course, Gloria C.

John C, the Meet Director.

Because of a problem at Control 11 on Course 4, the course results are unofficial. Control 12 was to be revealed only on a piece of the map to be found at 11.  Unfortunately an animal had damaged the plastic covering and heavy rains washed the map clean.  Four competitors accurately guessed  the location from the control description (those marked *);   3 late-starters were advised of the problem before starting (marked **). The other 10 competitors went from 11 directly to 14…a legitimate move under the circumstances. The Meet Director regrets the problem and apologies to all those concerned.
